‘The Forge’ Actress Priscilla Shirer Says Church Must Spend as Much Time on Discipleship as Evangelism

Actress Priscilla Shirer believes the church has often prioritized discipleship over evangelism and would like to see a new focus on discipleship. The author, speaker and actress says in her new film, ” Forge (Rated PG) tells the story of a young, irresponsible man who discovers faith and life lessons under the tutelage of a wise mentor. Shirer plays the young man’s mother.

The film hits theaters this weekend and was produced by the same filmmaking team (the Kendrick brothers). War Room and Overcomer.

“I think we’re so focused on getting people into the building, but not necessarily nurturing them once they’re there,” Shirer told Crosswalk Headlines.

She said the film is a reminder that discipleship, “walking one-on-one together,” can change lives.

“This film is important because it really shows what mentorship can do in a young person’s life — discipleship, really walking alongside someone and helping them mature,” Shirer said, “so when people see that demonstrated in the film, it really reminds them of the importance of mentorship in their own lives.”

The Great Commission Matthew 28She pointed out that the Bible commands Christians to “go and make disciples.” The film’s poster features the tagline, “He who most wants the next generation will get it.”

Former NFL player and author Benjamin Watson A new fight for life“Discipleship is something that is often overlooked because it’s hard,” he said. “Not just in the church, but in general, in our communities, in our families.” Watson appears in the film.

“We need to have a better understanding of what discipleship looks like,” Watson told Crosswalk Headlines. “Discipleship is painful. It’s about relationships. It takes time, it takes intentional effort, and often we’re not willing to do that. So this film is about relationships. It’s about a guy who steps out of his comfort zone to help someone else, and that’s something we need more of in our churches and in our homes.”
