Nationals top prospect set for MLB debut vs. Yankees

The Nationals called up two rookies for the game against the Yankees.

Washington’s top prospect Dylan Cruz is scheduled to make his MLB debut on Monday against the Bronx Bombers at Nationals Park. According to MLB Network Radio’s Grant Paulsen:

The Nationals will announce the news three days in advance, similar to how they recalled James Wood in July.

The 22-year-old outfielder is a product of Louisiana State University and was selected by the Nationals in the first round (second overall) of the 2023 MLB June Amateur Draft and is currently the third-best prospect in the league.

Cruz, a speedy pitcher who is scheduled to play center field on Monday, spent 2023 with Washington’s minor league affiliate, batting .292/.377/.467 before being promoted to the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings in June.

Cruz is hitting .271 with an .807 OPS to go with 56 hits, eight home runs and 19 walks in Triple-A this summer. So far in 2024, he has 107 hits, 13 home runs, 60 runs scored and 25 stolen bases.

Cruz may have sealed his major league invitation on Tuesday when he hit a three-run homer to give the Red Wings the lead in a game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Phillies’ affiliate.

The Nationals are falling in the National League East, 10.5 games out of the final six wild card spots, so they may look to bring in some new faces.

Washington (58-70) will play a three-game series against the Braves before returning home to face the Yankees.
