Trump Would Veto a National Abortion Ban

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that President Donald Trump would veto a nationwide abortion ban if it were passed during his second term.

“Abortion has been a hot topic throughout the campaign,” host Kristen Welker said. “Democrats have been saying this week and beyond this week that if Donald Trump is elected, he will ban abortion by federal law. Donald Trump has said he won’t ban it, but can any senators sitting here with me today promise me that if you and Donald Trump are elected, they won’t ban abortion by federal law?”

Vance said, “Kristen, I absolutely agree with that. Donald Trump has been as clear as possible on that. It’s important to take a step back and say what Donald Trump has said on the issue of abortion and how that differs from what Kamala Harris and the Democrats have said. Donald Trump wants to end the culture war on this particular issue. If California wants a different abortion policy than Ohio, then California has to respect Ohio and Ohio has to respect California.”

“Senator Graham said I would continue to say that a federal ban is necessary,” Welker said. “If such a bill ever made it to President Donald Trump’s desk, would he veto it?”

“He will. He will make it very clear that he will not support it,” Vance said.

“Would he veto it?” Welker said.

Vance said, “Well, if you don’t support it.”

“So he’s going to veto a federal ban on abortion?” Welker asked.

“I think he will. He’s made it very clear he will,” Vance said.
