Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who announced his support for President Donald Trump on Friday, posted on social media explaining what “MAGA” means to him.
“MAGA” is an acronym for President Trump’s iconic slogan, “Make America Great Again,” and has been demonized by Democrats. President Joe Biden and his administration have continually attacked what they call “ultra-MAGA” Republicans, or the “extreme MAGA agenda.”
(White House press secretary warned that attacking “MAGA Republicans” violates the Hatch Act.)
On Sunday on CNN Current State of the NationSen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) called on voters to “eradicate” the MAGA “strain.”
Kennedy Written:
The phrase has troubled liberals, who see it as a call for a return to the America before civil rights, gay rights and women’s rights. But I have a more generous interpretation, one that is truer to my experience of Donald Trump now. “Make America Great Again” evokes a country full of energy and drive, hope and faith. It was an America that was beginning to confront its dark shadows, acknowledging past and present injustices while also celebrating its successes. It was an America with a broadly prosperous, vibrant middle class and the world’s most vibrant middle class.[n] America had an idealistic (if not consistently applied) belief in liberty, justice, and democracy. America led the world in innovation, productivity, and technology. And it was the healthiest country in the world. I’ve talked to many of Trump’s supporters. I’ve talked to Trump’s aides. I’ve talked to Trump himself. This is the America they want to restore.
Kennedy’s father, Senator Robert F. Kennedy (D-New York), embodied a spirit of hope and optimism before he was shot dead by an assassin on June 5, 1968, after winning California’s Democratic presidential primary.
