Suspect sneaks up on man, 24, and whacks him on head with hammer in NYC attack

Police said a 24-year-old man was struck in the head with a hammer while talking to his girlfriend on a Bronx sidewalk Sunday afternoon.

Police say around 12:45 p.m., a suspect armed with a tool sneaked up behind the victim and struck him across the street from 1445 Nelson Avenue in the Highbridge neighborhood.

The injured victim was treated by medical staff at the scene a few minutes later.

Photos taken at the scene showed him with gauze bandages wrapped from the top of his head to under his chin and blood appeared to be dripping from the back of his head.

At one point, the victim, who was not wearing a shirt, lay down on top of his clothes to be assisted by paramedics.

He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.

Police said the suspect fled on foot after the attack and has not yet been arrested.

Further information, including a motive for the hammer attack, was not immediately available.
