Caitlin Clark shakes off ankle injury scare as Fever top Dream

Caitlin Clark showed off her superhero-like abilities in yet another competition.

The WNBA superstar sprained her ankle early in the first quarter of the Indiana Fever's 84-79 win over the Atlanta Dream but still scored a WNBA-tying 19 points.

The moment of concern came with 3:15 left in the first quarter, when Clark appeared to twist his ankle while trying to break through a screen and fell to the ground in apparent pain.

Clarke was lying on the ground and her teammates rushed to check on her and held her left ankle.

The team's training staff checked on Clark and escorted him off the court to the bench, where he remained until the end of the quarter before returning to the court for the second quarter.

After the game, Clark told reporters he didn't want to go to the locker room, he just wanted to play one more time.

“I saw the replay and it looked really weak. It wasn't a terrible turn but it hurt.” Clark told reporters. “Sometimes you just have to give it a little bit of time. If you've ever sprained your ankle, you're going to feel a little bit of pain. I was fine.”

She added: “Anyone who hasn't sprained their ankle a bunch of times isn't a real basketball player, and that's when you know it.”

Clark finished the game making 4 of 9 3-pointers and then made a step-back 3-pointer with just over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, recording her 85th 3-pointer of the season, tying her for most 3-pointers made by a WNBA rookie.

The record was set by Rhyne Howard during his rookie season in 2022, and ironically, Howard was guarding Clark at the time Clark made his record-tying three-point shot.

In Monday night's game, the Fever led throughout the game, though Atlanta made it close at the end.

Clark shot 6 of 14 from the field and also had seven rebounds and seven assists in Indiana's win.

Clark didn't seem to be bothered by the ankle after returning with some highlight plays, including a behind-the-back play to evade a defender for a layup in the third quarter.

The win against the Dream was played at State Farm Arena, which was relocated from the Dream's usual home stadium, Gateway Center Arena, to accommodate the larger-than-usual crowd that gathered to watch Clark play.

The Dream had 17,608 fans in attendance for the game, setting a new attendance record in the franchise's history.

“It's clear who Caitlin Clark is and the impact she's had on this league, especially this year,” Dream's Tina Charles told reporters before the game.
