The fiery crash and extensive damage was inevitable after officers spotted a car swerving and speeding on the main road late Monday.
Police Chief Scott Wall told reporters that initial evidence suggests the short pursuit began when a vehicle refused to yield when officers tried to stop it.
“Due to the increased speed, the supervisor terminated the pursuit,” Wall said. “Two officers working together in one vehicle were responding to a fleeing suspect when the suspect's vehicle ultimately struck the side of their vehicle at a high rate of speed.”
The other officer was taken to hospital in serious condition, but the chief claimed he was “in danger of losing his life.” The driver of the patrol car died at the scene.
The identities of the slain officer and the speeding driver were not released.
At least 20 San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDPD) deputies were dispatched in response to a radio call for help, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Daniel Wilson.
The chief added that several other vehicles were involved in the crash, but thankfully the other drivers were not seriously injured.
“The crash involving at least four vehicles was reported around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Doriva Drive and Claremont Mesa Boulevard, just west of Interstate 805.” NBC 7 – San Diego Reported.
Wall added that he has asked the California Highway Patrol to conduct an independent investigation and provide a detailed account of what happened.
“A lot of information is going to come out and we all have a lot of questions,” he said.
This month, San Diego Union-Tribune A city watchdog group has proposed 12 separate policy changes, including limiting pursuits to those related to violent crimes, it was revealed. The committee examined data from more than 1,000 encounters by San Diego police.
