Apple laying off dozens amid cuts to services division

Apple is laying off dozens of employees as part of a series of cuts that are unusual for a tech giant and will mostly affect workers in its services division, according to multiple reports.

The California-based phone and technology giant has begun notifying employees in its books and news divisions of the job cuts, The Verge reported. ReportedHe noted that the decision would affect around 100 jobs.

One of the most profitable companies on the planet, Apple has invested billions of dollars in recent years into its services division, which includes Apple TV, Apple Music and Apple News.

Representatives for the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple is one of several big tech companies aggressively moving into the burgeoning world of sports, entertainment and consumer streaming services.

At the same time, the company has faced increased scrutiny over its competitive practices, with the Department of Justice filing a lawsuit earlier this year over what the government alleges is an illegal monopoly in the smartphone market.

The company also announced job cuts in its retail division this year.

It's been a tough time for the country's major technology and media companies, with many of the industry's largest companies cutting jobs due to falling advertising revenues and concerns about the broader economy.
