Reddit appears to be back online after a major outage on Wednesday afternoon prevented users from accessing the popular online forum.
User reports of issues with Reddit's service spiked around 4pm ET. According to DowndetectorA website that tracks online outages.
The site received over 150,000 reports as users experienced issues with the Reddit app, website, and connection.
When trying to access the site, users received an error message that read, “An error has occurred. Please try again later.” The cause of the outage was not immediately clear, but Reddit acknowledged that it had experienced “degraded performance.”
“A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results,” Reddit said in an update around 4:45 p.m. ET.
Reddit did not immediately respond to a request for further comment. The company experienced a similar widespread outage in April of last year.
The San Francisco, California-based company operates one of the world's most popular social media apps, with Reddit having more than 267 million weekly active users as of April.
Reddit shares rose about 5% in trading on Wednesday before falling slightly after the close.
