A United Airlines flight was diverted to Memphis on Wednesday due to severe turbulence, and one person was taken to the hospital, authorities said.
United Airlines and the Memphis Fire Department said in separate statements that the person was taken to a hospital in non-critical condition after the flight, which was en route from Cancun, Mexico, to Chicago, landed at Memphis International Airport.
United Airlines said the turbulence occurred while the seat belt signs were on inside the plane.
Six other people refused treatment and were taken to a hospital, but the extent of their injuries is unknown, the Memphis Fire Department said.
Chicago-based United Airlines said there were 172 passengers and seven crew members on board the 737-900ER.
The plane was scheduled to resume flying to Chicago on Wednesday afternoon.
