Harris tops Trump by 5 points in post-convention poll

The poll, conducted after VP Harris formally accepted the party's nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last week, gives her a five-point lead over former President Trump.

USA Today/Suffolk University Poll, Released Thursday morningIn the poll, Harris had a large lead over her Republican rival with 48% to her 43%.

USA Today noted that Harris' lead was due to significant shifts among key demographic groups, including Hispanic, black and younger voters.

The survey found that the vice president holds a 23-point lead over the former president among those making less than $20,000 a year. A similar poll conducted in June, well before Biden dropped out of the race, had Trump leading the then-incumbent by 3 points.

The outlet noted that excluding the customary rounding of percentages, Harris' lead falls to about 4 percentage points – 47.6% to Trump's 43.3%, according to the poll.

Since Biden endorsed Harris, she has broken fundraising records, attracted key supporters and created excitement for the campaign, especially among younger voters.

Voters between the ages of 18 and 34 had previously supported Trump by 11 points over Biden, and with Harris leading the Democratic field, younger voters now favor her over the former president, 49 percent to 36 percent, respectively.

Harris also leads Trump by 16 points among Hispanic voters, receiving 53% of the vote to the Republican's 37%. Biden trailed Trump by 2 points in the previous poll.

The survey also found that black voters were more likely to support Harris over Biden.

The last survey of likely voters had Trump trailing the president by 47 percentage points, but Harris, who is of Jamaican and South Asian descent, widened that lead to 76 percentage points in the latest election.

Polls also show that lower-income voters now support Harris over Trump because she has said she has a plan to make housing more affordable.

The USA Today/Suffolk poll was conducted Aug. 25-28 among 1,000 voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
