Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has threatened to suspend Elon Musk's widely used social networking platform X (Twitter) if he does not appoint a legal representative for the company in Brazil within 24 hours.

Wednesday's court order comes after months of disagreement between Musk's pro-free speech platform and a Brazilian court order ordering the blocking of certain accounts described as “digital militias” that have been accused of “spreading fake news and hate messages.”
Elon Musk and his Brazilian team challenged the decision to censor the accounts, arguing that it was “unconstitutional,” and Moraes launched an investigation into Musk in April.
However, Company X’s employees, who operated within the Brazilian jurisdiction, ultimately agreed with the court’s decision and complied with the legal ruling.
Earlier this month, following the dispute, X announced that it had shut down its operations in Brazil and fired all of its staff in the country due to a “censorship order” issued by a judge, but that X would continue to be available to users in the country.
Additionally, X representatives alleged that Moraes had secretly threatened one of the company's legal representatives in the country if X did not comply with a court order to censor content on its platform.
“Last night, Alexandre de Moraes threatened our legal representative in Brazil with arrest if we did not comply with his censorship orders. He did so with secret orders, but we are sharing it here to expose his actions,” X's Global Government Issues account posted.
Wednesday's ruling declared that companies that do not comply with the country's laws regulating online speech could be temporarily suspended.
Brazilian politician Nicolas Ferreira, who has 4 million followers on X, spoke out about his country's efforts to censor and shut down the platform.
“Banning X in Brazil not only affects Elon Musk, but also over 22 million users who do not want to be censored. This is not democracy, no matter what the left says,” he wrote.
Elon Musk also claimed that Moraes had frozen the financial accounts of another company he owns in Brazil, Starlink.
“This man [Moraes] “He is clearly the worst kind of criminal, posing as a judge,” Musk wrote to X.
Musk's company, X, faces a temporary suspension in the country if it does not comply with the court order by 8pm local time on Thursday, which would prevent millions of Brazilians from accessing the platform.
