Blue Jackets mourn Johnny Gaudreau’s death two years after goalie’s tragedy

The NHL was in mourning after the tragic death of Blue Jackets star Johnny Gaudreau in New Jersey on Thursday night.

This was the second freak accident to occur in just as many years for the Blue Jackets, adding another layer of devastation to the mix.

Three summers ago, the organization's 24-year-old goaltender, Matisse Kibrenieks, died from chest trauma in an accident at the Novi, Michigan, home of then-goaltending coach Manny Legase.

Police at the time said the injuries were caused by the explosion of a firework mortar that had been accidentally fired.

In what was later ruled an accidental death, police said a firework had tipped slightly and was launched at people nearby, hitting Kibrenieks as he was trying to avoid the firework while in a hot tub.

Kibrenieks, a native of Latvia, played for his country at the World Championships that spring and was viewed as a possible No. 2 goaltender for the Blue Jackets in 2021-22.

Like Gaudreau's, Kibrenieks' death was tied to a wedding: Legace was hosting a reception in his backyard when the tragedy occurred.

Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were in their hometown of Old Mans Township, New Jersey, for the wedding of his sister Katie, where he was scheduled to serve as groomsman.

Johnny Gaudreau was 31 and Matthew Gaudreau was 29.

The two were riding their bicycles together when they were struck by suspected drunk driver Shawn Higgins, who was attempting to pass a vehicle on County Road 551.

“The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy,” the team said in a statement. “Not only was Johnny a great hockey player, but above all he was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Meredith, children Noah and Johnny, their parents, their families and friends on the sudden passing of Johnny and Matthew. Johnny played with great joy that was felt by all who saw him on the ice. From Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets, he carried with him a pure love of hockey wherever he played.”

“He thrilled our fans in a way that only Johnny Hockey can. His impact on our organization and our sport is immeasurable, but pales in comparison to the indelible impression he left on all who knew him. Johnny gave our community a rousing welcome upon his arrival two years ago, and Columbus welcomed him with open arms. We will miss him dearly and will do all we can to support his family and each other through this tragedy. Our prayers are with the Gaudreau family at this time and we ask that their privacy be respected as they grieve.”
