The first college football upset of the season came from the SEC.
Surprisingly, it was an SEC team that pulled off the upset.
Vanderbilt, an oft-forgotten underdog in one of college football's big conferences, beat Virginia Tech 34-27 in overtime, putting a spotlight on a school that rarely gets the spotlight.
The Commodores, who were 13.5-point underdogs on the day, were disappointed when they missed a game-winning field goal at the end of overtime, but they scored a touchdown in extra time and got a stop afterward to seal the victory.
Quarterback Diego Pavia, who finished the day with 190 yards and two touchdowns, scored on a 4-yard run to put Vanderbilt ahead in overtime.
On the ensuing drive, Virginia Tech advanced inside the 10-yard line, and a sack by Zaylin Wood gave them a fourth-and-11 situation, leading to an incomplete pass by Collin Schley to seal the win.
The Hokies entered the season unranked but were a team looking to make inroads in a crowded ACC this season.

They may now need to reassess.
Vanderbilt, which hasn't played in a bowl game since 2018, might do the same thing, but this time in the opposite direction.
Six wins would be considered a big step forward for Clark Lea's program, but they'll likely need a couple more upsets along the way.
But this is certainly a strong start.
