Alarming ‘fashion braces’ trend leads to warning from dentists

They're trying to steer DIYers in the right direction.

Dental experts are urging people to avoid the use of fake, decorative at-home braces (also known as “fashion braces”) because they contain unnecessary heavy metals that can cause painful tooth damage, harmful misalignments and mouth infections.

“Tooth enamel doesn't grow back,” says Dr. Samuel Lee, an orthodontist in Southern California. He told “Today” on Monday“Once it's broken, once it's shattered, it's over.”

“Fashion braces” aren't new — A 2018 medical journal article warned: Non-medical devices are becoming popular in Southeast Asia as teenagers seek to achieve a certain “luxury standard”, he said.

The “fashion braces” movement is spreading to other parts of the world, despite concerns that fake braces are made from poor quality materials and could harm teeth, gums, lips and surrounding bones.

Now, a rise in TikTok tutorials showing how to glue or clip on dental jewelry has drawn fresh criticism from orthodontists.

July Blog PostsDr. Paul DiFranco reported that cosmetic brackets and wires may contain toxic chemicals such as cadmium and lead, and the adhesives in the kits are usually not medical grade.

“There is an increased risk that the wires or brackets could become dislodged and cut your gums or jaw,” wrote DiFranco, who has a private practice in Palos Hills, Ill. “If they become dislodged completely, they can pose a choking hazard and may result in a trip to your local emergency room.”

In May, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Warned Fashion braces can have “serious implications” to oral health, including the risk of heavy metals leaching from the appliances into oral tissues, causing infections.

The AAO also highlighted another troubling trend: “basement orthodontics,” in which people in need of dental care seek out unlicensed or uncertified providers to avoid the cost of expensive orthodontic appliances.

According to Today, the average cost of metal braces ranges from $3,000 to $7,000, but installment payments and more affordable options may be available.

“If you are looking to improve the aesthetic appearance of your teeth, it is very important to consult a dental professional and explore what your options are,” Lee told the media.
