‘Star Trek’ Actor James Darren Dead At 88

James Darren, best known for his roles in “TJ Hooker” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” died Monday at the age of 88.

Darren's son, Jim Mullet, confirmed that Darren died peacefully in his sleep at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. TMZMoretto said her father had heart problems and was being treated in the cardiac ward. He had previously been admitted to undergo an aortic valve replacement surgery, but was sent home after doctors said he was too weak for the procedure. He was eventually admitted back to hospital, where he sadly passed away, according to TMZ.

The official cause of Darren's death has not yet been determined.

The veteran actor launched his career as a teen heartthrob in 1959's Gidget, playing the surfer known as Moondoggy, before going on to star in sequels Gidget Goes Hawaiian and Gidget Goes Rome.

The famous actor played the recurring role of police officer Jim Corrigan on “TJ Hooker,” appearing in 66 episodes across the show's four seasons. He also had a recurring role on “Deep Space Nine,” playing singer Vic Fontaine in the late 1990s, according to TMZ.

Darren's acting talents were complemented by his talents as a singer and director. He directed many well-known TV shows, including Melrose Place, 90210 and The A-Team.

Darren sang the theme song for Gidget and other songs in the film, including his song “Goodbye Cruel World,” which reached number three on the Billboard charts in 1961. (RELATED: NHL superstar Johnny Gaudreau and his brother announced dead after tragic accident)

Tributes have been flooding social media as fans and loved ones share fond memories of the star.

Darren is survived by three sons and five grandchildren.
