Online graphic design platform Canva hit with backlash over ‘insane’ price hikes

Canva is facing backlash from customers over plans to raise subscription prices by more than 300% in some cases.

The graphic design platform, which positions itself as a more affordable alternative to Adobe, notified users of its Canva Teams package of a price increase last week, sparking an outrage online.

One customer is believed He shared an email he received from Canva informing him that its multi-user subscription price would increase from $119.99 to $300 per year on December 8. The company said this was a “discounted” price for the next 12 months, after which the price would rise to $500.

Another user announced they were cancelling their subscription after three happy years of use when they were informed that the new plan would more than triple the price: “Price increases are normal but going from £10.99 to £36 a month is outrageous,” they wrote.

Canva did not immediately respond to FOX Business' request for comment, but in response to several users who have complained online, it said it had “adjusted prices to reflect the added value of our new tools and to ensure a fair and sustainable pricing model.”

A Canva spokesperson also said: The Verge The recent price increase was justified by the “enhanced product experience” and value of the generative AI tools the platform has added, it said.

But some users said they didn't want the new tools and weren't willing to pay the increased prices for them.

“Canva's price hike is insane,” one person wrote to X. “Why not just keep the regular team/pro plan and have a premium plan option that includes all the AI ​​features?”

In its response, Canva said the price increase only affects Canva Teams users on accounts with two or more users, and that Solo Pro pricing will remain unchanged. Still, many customers are resisting.

“Interesting price increase @canva,” one user wrote. “I'm going to cancel and go back to Adobe as I don't really use the second sheet. But in the marketing group I'm in now, it looks like @Adobe has a chance. People are angry and already considering quitting Canva.”
