Trump and Harris in toss-up races in key swing states Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada: poll

Former President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are neck and neck in key battleground states as their campaigns enter the final weeks before Election Day, according to a new CNN poll.

Wednesday's poll showed Harris holding slight leads in Michigan and Wisconsin, while Trump has a lead in Arizona, while the race is close in Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

Harris leads Trump 50-44% in Wisconsin and 48-43% in Michigan. Trump leads Harris 49-44% in Arizona. In close states, Harris has 48% to Trump 47% in Georgia and Nevada, and Harris and Trump are tied in Pennsylvania at 47%.

CNN conducted the poll among likely voters from Aug. 23 to 29 after the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and has a margin of error of 4.9 percentage points.

Trump campaign pollsters have said they are pleased with the former president's current standing in national surveys, pointing out that he has a history of outperforming the polls.

“At this point in the 2016 campaign, Donald Trump was trailing Hillary Clinton by an average of 5.9 points. At this point in the 2020 campaign, he was trailing Joe Biden by 6.9 points,” senior adviser Corey Lewandowski noted in an interview on “Fox News Sunday” this weekend.

Still, Harris' entry into the race is sure to energize Democratic supporters, whose enthusiasm was extremely low when President Biden was seeking reelection.

But other polls have shown a more encouraging sign for Trump, with his support among Hispanics outpacing his 2020 support.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted Aug. 21-28, found Hispanic voters giving Trump an edge over Harris on immigration, 42% to 37%. Among voters overall, 46% support Trump on immigration, while 36% support Harris.

The poll found that Hispanics, considered a diverse and rapidly growing segment of the U.S. electorate, favor Harris over Trump on health care by 18 percentage points and on climate change by 23 percentage points. On economic issues, registered voters generally favor Trump's policies over Harris's by 45 percentage points and 36 percentage points, respectively.

Meanwhile, prominent election forecaster Nate Silver on Tuesday downgraded Harris' chances of winning, citing her relatively poor performance in Pennsylvania, a battleground state that holds the most electoral votes.

Silver also noted that Harris did not benefit as much from the excitement around the Democratic National Convention as electoral models predicted.
