‘I gotta protect my family; that’s just the end of it’: Homeowner shoots ‘giant’ male who entered his bedroom after midnight

A Washington state homeowner shot and killed a “huge” intruder who broke into the bedroom he shares with his wife early Tuesday morning.

Kent Police He told KOMO-TV The incident happened at 1:27 a.m. in the 26600 block of SE 134th Street.

“When you hear the stories, you never think you'll be a victim until it happens to you, until it happens to your family,” he told the station.

The station spoke exclusively with the homeowner about the incident, but KOMO said the homeowner is still too shaken up to release his identity.

“Honestly, I still keep going back to my bedroom thinking, 'Did that really just happen?'” the homeowner told police.

The victim told KOMO he and his wife were asleep when a man came into the bedroom and turned on the light.

“It all happened in a flash. I woke up to a giant standing in my bedroom,” the homeowner told police, adding that he believed the intruder was at least 6ft 5ins tall.

The homeowner told KOMO he began hitting the intruder with an object from a nearby nightstand, then pulled out a gun and opened fire.

“I think [being hit with objects] He helped me push him out the door, giving me just enough time to run to safety. [and retrieve my gun]”I fired two shots” but “I don't know if I hit him or not,” the suspect told the station.

According to Kent Police, officers responded to an apartment in the 14900 block of SE 272nd Street at approximately 3:05 a.m. for a medical call regarding a person with a gunshot wound. Officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the torso matching the description of the robbery suspect. Officers applied a chest seal to the open wound and Puget Sound Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter to continue treatment.

Police said the robber, a 39-year-old Kent resident, was taken to the hospital for further treatment. Regarding the shooting, officers said the homeowner had a handgun permit and was legally in possession of a gun at the time of the incident. They said the gunman acted lawfully.

The homeowner added to the station that in addition to his wife and daughter, his brother and his family were also in the home, meaning five children were in the home at the time of the incident.

That being said, the homeowner stressed to KOMO that he didn't hesitate, and would do so again, to protect multiple loved ones.

“When you hear the stories, you never think you'll be a victim until it happens to you, until it happens to your family,” he told the station.

“This is my retreat, this is my home, this is where we live,” the homeowner added to KOMO. “I have to protect my family, that's all.”
