House Education Committee subpoenas Walz over Minnesota nonprofit's COVID-19 fraud

The House Education and Labor Committee issued a subpoena Wednesday to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, over a Minnesota nonprofit that is accused of defrauding the government during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minnesota-based Feeding Our Future (FOF) is accused of misusing $250 million in taxpayer funds that were meant to go to hungry children.

Federal charges have been filed against more than 70 people, including five convicted of fraud, connected to the nonprofit, which allegedly submitted fake names of children who were allegedly receiving free meals during the pandemic.

Education Commissioner Virginia Foxx, R.N.C., issued subpoenas to Walz, Minnesota Education Commissioner Willie Jett, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Agriculture Inspector General Phyllis Fong.

“Based on press statements by you and your representatives, it appears that you and other officers were involved in or knew about MDE’s wrongdoing. [Minnesota Department of Education] Managing FCNP [Federal Child Nutrition Program] “I ask you to explain your government's responsibility and actions regarding this massive fraud,” Fox said in a letter to Walz.

The governor was given until Sept. 18 to provide the committee with documents and the information requested.

The Hill has reached out to the governor's office and the Harris-Waltz campaign for comment.

This is not the first time House Republicans have launched investigations into Walz or Vice President Harris since the presidential race began.

Republicans are also investigating Walz's ties to China and Harris' work on border and immigration policy.

Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) was quick to accuse the school board of abusing its power for political purposes.

“Blatant use of public resources for election campaigning. Truly disgusting!” He said in X In response to the summons.
