Authorities have identified two 14-year-old students and two teachers who were shot and killed in a horrific mass murder at a Georgia high school on Wednesday morning.
Authorities said at an evening press conference that 14-year-old gunman, Colt Gray, opened fire inside Apalachee High School around 10:30 a.m., killing teenagers Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimy.
Aspinwall was also an assistant coach for the Winder-based school's football team and served as defensive coordinator. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Eight students, identified as David Phoenix, and one teacher were also injured in the massacre.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said the nine injured are expected to survive.
Gray was taken into custody shortly after he began firing shots with an AR-15-style gun and is expected to be charged as an adult.
“I ask all Georgians and all Americans to continue to keep these families, educators and students in their thoughts and prayers,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said Wednesday night.
“And we're going to provide every single resource of the state that's needed until it's gone, to support this community and to support the team behind me.”
Police said they were examining a mountain of evidence to determine a motive for the bloody attack.
But federal officials said Gray had been under FBI surveillance for more than a year before the shooting.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office received multiple tips about threats to carry out a school shooting in May 2023, which led to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office interviewing the boy and his father.
At the time, authorities said there was no justification for any arrests or further action.
