Ah the vagaries of form, fixtures and fortune. Scotland embark on a top-tier Nations League campaign for the first time, promoted to League A as part of a fine run during 2022 and 2023 that included statement victories over Ukraine, Norway and Spain. Possible debuts for Ryan Gauld and Ben Doak could get Hampden roaring again. Main Events
20 minutes: Scotland continue to pound Poland and Szymanski continues to get hammered by Robertson, though in fairness it's more out of enthusiasm than aggression.
18 minutes: McTominay expressed some frustration, saying: Make a clattering noise The ball hit Szymanski on the back, we've seen lighter warnings but the referee didn't even think about blowing the whistle for a free kick for some time, and McTominay will be happy with the final compromise as he goes off unpunished.
16th minute: Christie makes some noise down the left and passes to Robertson who hooks the ball into the mixer. Dykes competes for a header but is over-eager and the whistle blows. It's a sufficient response to falling behind, even if Burka hasn't yet had a shot on target.
15 minutes: Robertson rolls a free kick in front of goal and the Polish defense blocks McTominay as he prepares to shoot. No good. “Great shot from Stevie Clarke, with a big bag behind him that just says 'Drugs',” reports James Humphreys. “He's clearly as unsure of himself as I am.”
14 min: McTominay, as always, is causing trouble down the right wing, rolling just outside the penalty area for a free-kick in a dangerous position with Robertson watching.
12 minutes: Scotland try and hit back quickly. Robertson sends an up-and-under pass into the box from the left. Burka catches it but it falls under pressure from Dykes. Dykes, lying prone, spins the ball towards goal and tries to hook it. He can't get a hold of it and the keeper catches it on the second attempt.
10 minutes: Szymanski's shot hit the inside of the goalpost, but Gunn could have done better – the goalkeeper got to it a little too late – and, to provide balance, ITV co-commentator Neil McCann called the shot “unstoppable”.

…And then they got their second goal and took the lead. McLean made a strong pass to Gilmour in midfield. Urbanski stole the ball and passed it to Szymanski, who strode down the middle and curled a diving shot from 25 yards into the bottom right corner.
7 min: Poland struck for the first time, Zalewski making a good move down the left wing before gliding across the field and firing towards the bottom left. It was an easy win for Gunn, but after a strong start from Scotland it was Poland who took the angry lead.
6 min: McClean makes a couple of tackles in the middle of the pitch. Twice he wins the ball back for Poland, and twice his team-mates fail to get it back. He gestures with a bit of frustration, but it's a sign of McClean's tenacity. Onwards and up.
4 minutes: That was some crisp movement down the left wing. Scotland started confidently, denying Poland time on the ball and passing the ball around cleverly. I'd like to see more of that.
2 min: Dykes fed McTominay down the left wing, who ran into space and tried to return the ball with a low cross, but Dykes couldn't keep up and Poland's new keeper, Burka, smashed the ball wide from inside his own six-yard box.
Scotland kick off. McLean gets the ball rolling. Hampden on the rise!
The team is out! As the players emerge from the tunnel, a packed Hampden crowd isn't cheering (at least not yet), but the applause is warm and sustained. Scotland's blue and yellow flag is raised, Poland's second-choice red flag. There's a handshake, a coin toss, a pennant exchange, patriotic folk music, and then, a few minutes later, they're off.
Scotland captain Andy Robertson will make his 75th appearance in the navy blue shirt tonight. He will be just the seventh player to achieve this feat. Where does he rank in the Hall of Fame right now? John McGinn isn't far behind him.

Ah, the shifting shapes, fixtures and fates. Scotland have been promoted to League A and will compete in the top-tier Nations League for the first time after strong performances in 2022 and 2023, which included impressive wins over Ukraine, Norway and Spain, while arch rivals England have suffered four straight home defeats to Hungary on their way to relegation to League B.
Those days are long gone. England reached the Euro 2024 final, Spain won, and Hungary sent Steve Clarke's team home for another round of reflection. There's no point in digging into old wounds, but Scotland are rising now… Okay, let's not do that. But the team really needs to bounce back after their 2022 and 2023 hopes were systematically dashed in Germany. They've lost seven of their last 12 games, drawing four and their only win was against Gibraltar, a completely disappointing 2-0. Debuts for Ryan Gauld and Ben Doak could bring momentum back to Hampden. They'll be faced with a Poland side that also endured a miserable Euros, but with Robert Lewandowski and never losing an official match against Scotland. Kick-off is at 7.45pm BST. It has begun!
