Gina Carano Reflects on Legal Victory and Upcoming MMA Return
Englewood, California — Nearly 17 years after her last professional fight, MMA pioneer Gina Carano attended a press conference on Thursday, celebrating a significant legal settlement with Disney. This comes after her high-profile firing from “The Mandalorian” due to her outspoken views.
As she gears up to headline Netflix’s first live women’s mixed martial arts event against Ronda Rousey this Saturday, Carano is also mulling over the intense public backlash that almost derailed her career.
After retiring from fighting in 2009, she ventured into Hollywood and, in 2019, found acclaim playing Cara Dune in “The Mandalorian.” However, her time was cut short in 2021 when she was dismissed for social media posts that challenged COVID-19 mandates and social justice issues.
This sparked a nationwide conversation about free speech and political views in Hollywood. During the press conference, when asked about regrets on her stance, Carano was interrupted by someone shouting, “F-Disney.”
“I stand up for free speech in this country,” she asserted. “I have no apologies for what I said. Looking back, I feel very confident because everything I said came true.” A sense of pride radiated from her as she discussed the personal consequences she faced for voicing her beliefs.
“Everyone was holding their breath, but not me,” she noted. “I typically remain calm, but I felt compelled to speak up again and again, no matter the repercussions. I can’t allow the current course of this country to continue unchecked.”
Carano has consistently claimed that her conservative views led to being targeted, a claim fundamental to her lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm, which publicly criticized her social media activity. Reflecting on the moment she chose to speak out, she conveyed a poised determination, highlighting the fear pervasive in the entertainment industry.
Her legal saga reached a pivotal moment in August 2025, culminating in a settlement with Disney and Lucasfilm, bolstered by financial support from figures like Elon Musk.
“Even if we differ in opinion, we shouldn’t be losing our rights,” she emphasized. Many, she noted, have suffered job losses for voicing opposing views, which she strongly opposes.
While the settlement represented a legal gain, the past years were arduous for Carano, showcasing her unwavering resilience. The deal was not only about the money; it was a pronounced statement against what she perceives as corporate encroachment on personal beliefs.
Now, with May 16 marking her return to the ring, Carano described the upcoming bout as a personal reclaiming of power. “It’s more than just physical,” she explained. “It’s about taking back control over my body and my voice.” Amidst it all, she exudes a calm sense of purpose as she battles for the rights she fervently defends.
