Yankees’ legendary radio voice John Sterling coming out of retirement to call postseason games: report

Legendary New York Yankees radio announcer John Sterling will come out of retirement to call the playoff games as the team seeks its 28th World Series title.

The 86-year-old Sterling, who announced his retirement earlier this season, will call the games for WFAN. Athletic Reported.

It seemed like a natural fit to have the iconic radio voice return to the airwaves this October, so Yankees executives and Audacy New York president Chris Oliviero called to offer him the job.

The Athletic added that the conversation with Sterling took place two weeks ago, with the postseason weighing heavily on the Yankees' future.

Sterling will not only be calling home games, but will also be traveling to call games where the Yankees are the visiting team.

Sterling, who has been a Yankees radio announcer since 1989 and called games on WFAN at the start of the season, announced his retirement on April 15.

Since then, WFAN has used a committee system with Emmanuel Belvari, Justin Shakir and Ricky Ricardo providing game-day commentary along with Sterling's longtime commentator Suzyn Waldman. WFAN has not yet decided whether to hire a full-time commentator to replace Sterling next season.

“I don't want to hurt anybody for anybody,” Sterling said in June on “The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman” podcast, when he said he wouldn't be involved in the selection process for his successor. “I think the young guys are doing a great job. There's no problem.”

The Yankees held a ceremony at the ballpark on April 20 to honor Sterling's longtime radio career.

Sterling, who made his pitching debut before 1990, has seen the Yankees reach the postseason many times and was responsible for seven World Series appearances during his illustrious career, including as a pitcher in 2009 when the team defeated the Philadelphia Phillies to reach the World Series championship.

The Yankees have reached the ALCS until 2022 but have not been able to beat the Houston Astros in any series since then, losing to Houston in seven and six games in 2017 and 2019, respectively, during seasons notorious for cheating scandals.

New York is currently half a game behind the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East standings but leads the American League Wild Card race by 4.5 games, of which there are three wild card spots.

The Yankees are expected to clinch at least a wild-card spot in this season's postseason and will be hoping this is the year they end their streak without a World Series appearance.
