The presidential election will likely be decided by one electoral vote, Maine state congressional candidate Austin Theriault, a former NASCAR driver seeking to unseat Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) in the state's 2nd Congressional District, said in an interview with a Maine television station. Breitbart News Daily this week.
Maine is unique in that it's one of only two states (the other is Nebraska) that doesn't distribute its electoral votes on a winner-take-all basis. Instead, the winner of each district (Maine has only two districts) gets one vote and the statewide winner gets two votes. When asked how this will affect the race, Theriault pointed to some predictions that suggest it could all depend on Maine.
“Explain to me how this would work, because it could literally be your district and the state of Nebraska that decides who's president. That's within the realm of possibility,” host Mike Slater said.
“That's right. There are predictions that it could literally come down to one electoral vote, and if that happens, Maine's 2nd Congressional District will have a huge impact on the outcome of the election,” he explained.
“Maine splits its electoral votes, so in the 2nd Congressional District, where I'm running for Congress, I get one vote no matter who wins. In the 1st Congressional District, which is in the southern part of the state and is somewhat, fairly liberal, they have one electoral vote,” he said. The 1st Congressional District includes areas such as Portland.

“And whoever wins statewide gets two, and in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, we have a lot of work to do. [Congressional] “This district was clearly chosen to ensure a victory for President Trump. He won this district in 2016 and 2020, but frankly, at this point it's a little closer than we'd like,” he said, pointing to the massive canvassing effort to get people involved in the election.
“You know, everybody's participating in this election. People who never thought they'd be involved in politics are participating in this election. That's what's happening in our country right now. People are disappointed in their politicians,” Theriault explained.
“They're obviously disappointed in the administration, but they're also disappointed in down-ballot lawmakers like my opponent, Jared Golden,” he continued, accusing Democratic incumbents of “big talk” in 2018.
“When he ran for Congress in his district he said he'd do everything, but then he went to Washington, D.C., and Washington, D.C. changed him. And that's the problem we're seeing across the country, you know. We're seeing Washington, D.C. change a lot of people, and that's unfortunate,” he said, explaining that this is exactly what the Founding Fathers didn't want in their leaders.
“That's not what our founding fathers wanted for our country. You know, they didn't want a career politician. They didn't want someone who said one thing and did another. They wanted a statesman. They wanted someone who would do the right thing. And that's what we're fighting for in this election,” he added.
