Kamala Harris Reversed Her Pledge to Ban Plastic Straws

Presidential candidate Kamala Harris has backed away from a 2019 pledge to ban plastic straws because of climate change, according to her campaign staff.

During a 2019 CNN town hall, Kamala Harris said the US should ban plastic straws to fight the climate crisis, even though she acknowledged that paper straws can be difficult to drink from.

“Innovation is a process, but let's encourage innovation. I think we can make something a little better than those flimsy plastic straws,” she said. “We need to ban plastic.”

Axios' Alex Thompson reported on Thursday that Kamala Harris' campaign said it was “no longer her position.”

“Banning plastic straws to protect the environment and marine life is the latest progressive issue on which Harris and her campaign have either refused to comment or changed their position.” attention Report.

“Plastic straws have been banned in many parts of the country due to growing concerns about plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways,” it added.

When reached for comment, Harris' campaign said, “She does not support a ban on plastic straws.”

“She delivered a runoff vote on the most significant bill in history to fight climate change and create clean energy jobs, and as president she will be focused on building on that progress,” the statement added. “Even then, she was joking about how terrible paper straws were and the need to come up with more environmentally friendly alternatives.”

Her alleged change of policy on the plastic straw ban comes a week after she backed away from her earlier call to ban fracking.

“There's no question I support a ban on fracking,” Harris said during the 2020 primary, “and it starts with what we can do on public lands from day one. We need legislation. Yes, that's what I've done in California. I have a history of working on this issue… We have to acknowledge that the residual impacts of fracking are significant in terms of their impacts on the health and safety of our communities.”

When pressed by Dana Bash about her past comments, Harris said she never promised to ban fracking.

“I made that clear in the 2020 debates,” she said. “I will not ban fracking. As vice president, I did not ban fracking. As president, I will not ban fracking.”
