British tennis star Jack Draper vomits during dramatic US Open semifinal loss; Jannik Sinner advances

The situation inside Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday likely took a toll on Jack Draper.

The British tennis player vomited multiple times during his US Open semi-final match against Italy's Jannik Sinner.

“It's the worst feeling I've ever had,” Draper told tennis.com about the apparent illness she experienced on court, “and it's like you can't even move around the court.”

But Sinner had his own issues during the bout, as trainers tended to his injured wrist while Draper was receiving medical treatment after vomiting a second time.

The 23-year-old Sinner entered the final Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year as the world number one ranked player.

But he found himself at the center of controversy heading into the U.S. Open. Sinner failed two drug tests in March but was cleared of doping less than a week before the tournament began in New York.

Sinner, who beat Draper to reach his first title match at Flushing Meadows and his second at a Grand Slam tournament this year, spoke about the physical nature of the match.

“As you can see, it was a very physical match,” said Sinner, who is right-handed but uses two fists for his backhand and continued to bend his left wrist after the injury. “I just tried to stay in that mental state.”

While both players were being tested during the changeover, Draper, a 22-year-old British player and No. 25 seed, was using a vacuum cleaner to clean up the green behind the baseline where she had vomited.

It was reminiscent of when Pete Sampras spat out his lunch during his win over Alex Corretja in the 1996 U.S. Open, making for an unusual scene at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday, when temperatures were in the high 70s and humidity exceeded 60 percent.

Sinner won the Australian Open in January and will seek a second major championship on Sunday when he takes on Taylor Fritz and Francis Tiafoe, who he met in Friday night's U.S. semifinal.
