Maher, GOP guest get into tense exchange over Jan. 6, Trump

Comedian Bill Maher and Republican guest, National Review editor-in-chief Rich Lowry, got into a tense exchange on “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday about voting for former President Trump and the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the Capitol.

Raleigh Participated Panelists on the show will include former National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster and former CNN anchor John Avalon.

Avalon spoke about the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and Trump's involvement in it. He said that with 60 days until the election, the country is on a path to a legal battle with Trump that is “far too dangerous.”

“One thing is he is actually committing a crime. And if the positions were reversed and a Democrat had done the same thing, not only would Republicans be going after them, they would actually be committing a crime,” Maher said.

Rowley, a Republican, said he had spoken publicly about being “completely appalled” by the riot.

“I'm not so shocked that I'm not going to vote for Trump,” Maher interjected.

“This isn't right, Bill,” said Laurie.

“You're not surprised!” Mr. Maher continued.

“No, I'm appalled,” Rowley said.

“But you're still going to vote for him,” Maher said.

Lowry asked Maher whether he would still be opposed to Trump if January 6th hadn't happened.

“Because you don't like his policies?” he asked.

Maher said he disagrees with Trump “mostly” on policy.

“I would consider voting absentee on January 6th.Number“?” asked Laurie.

“No,” Maher replied.

“Yes,” said Laurie.

Maher said the biggest problem was Trump's refusal to concede defeat in the 2020 presidential election and his politicization of the Justice Department.

After the tense exchange, the show continued and they discussed the upcoming presidential debate, among other political issues.
