First investor outside Facebook: Today, social media company Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:Meta), which is valued at $1.3 trillion. Thiel was the company's first outside investor in 2004, putting $500,000 into the company when it was valued at $4.9 million.
Thiel owned 10.2% of the company, more than 44 million shares at the time of the company's IPO in 2012. Thiel sold 16.8 million shares in the IPO, making a profit of $640 million, and later sold most of his holdings.
Thiel has since grown his $500,000 investment in Facebook into a total of more than $1 billion, CNN reported.
Support Trump: Thiel's involvement in politics has been a hot topic in recent years: The investor is supporting Donald Trump in the 2024 election and has ties to Trump's running mate, J.D. Vance.
