Kentucky State Police reported a “shooting” occurred Saturday evening near Interstate 75 in London, south of Lexington, and that “multiple people” were shot in a traffic collision.
According to multiple media reports, the incident began just before 6pm local time when police were called to reports of multiple vehicles being shot at on an interstate in Laurel County, about nine miles from London. The shooting was reported to have come from a wooded area or overpass.
“Please avoid the I-75/49 area until further notice! Use alternate routes and stay out of the area,” London Mayor Randall Weddle said on Facebook.
Police officials said no suspects have been arrested.
“The suspect has not been arrested at this time and we urge residents to remain indoors,” Kentucky State Police Trooper Scotty Pennington wrote on Facebook.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear posted on X: “We are aware of a shooting that occurred on I-75 in Laurel County, Kentucky. Please stay out of the area. We will provide more information as it becomes available.”
He also called on residents to “pray for all involved.”
London is a small city of about 8,000 people located about 100 miles northwest of the state capital, Frankfort.
