Taylor Fritz is one match and a formidable opponent away from ending the American man's 21-year Grand Slam title streak.
Today, Fritz, ranked 12th in the world, will face current Australian Open champion and world number one Jannik Sinner in the 2024 U.S. Open final. It will be Fritz's first Grand Slam final, while Sinner has reached at least the semifinals of all four major tournaments in 2024.
Fritz is the first American man to play in a major Grand Slam final since 2009. The last time an American played in the U.S. Open men's singles final was in 2006. He reached the final on Friday night, defeating friend and fellow American Francis Tiafoe in a tight five-set match.
Sinner, who had been a controversial figure heading into the US Open, faced world No. 25 Jack Draper in the semifinals and easily won his way to the finals. Prior to this year's US Open, it was revealed that Sinner tested positive for trace amounts of the anabolic steroid clostebol twice over an eight-day period in March. He was not suspended, but was stripped of his ranking points and prize money.
Winning the U.S. Open also comes with a whopping $3.6 million in prize money (the runner-up also takes home $1.8 million).
The finals will be broadcast live this afternoon on ABC and ESPN+.
