LONDON (AP) — King Charles III attended a church near the royal estate of Balmoral in Scotland to offer prayers and remember his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Sunday, two years after her death.
Prince Charles, 75, and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were spending the summer in the Scottish Highlands when the late Prince Charles passed away on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96.
Prince Charles and Camilla were spotted arriving for a Sunday morning service at Crathie Kirk, a small granite chapel that serves as the royal family's place of worship while staying at nearby Balmoral Castle. Charles' great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, laid the foundation stone for the church, and Queen Elizabeth regularly attends services there.
Prince Charles ascended to the throne two years ago Sunday, following the death of his mother in his 60th anniversary year on the throne, after a record-breaking 70 years in power.
Prince Charles' second year as monarch has been hit by two major health blows: Earlier this year, he and his daughter-in-law, Princess Kate, announced they had been diagnosed with unnamed cancers.
The Queen has been gradually returning to official duties, taking part in dozens of visits, meetings, and events. On Saturday, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were seen looking smiling and in high spirits as they visited the Braemar Gathering Highland Games, an annual event featuring bagpipes, Highland dancing, tug-of-war, and other traditional games.
