Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) argued on ABC's “This Week” on Sunday that voting or putting your name down for former President Donald Trump is “abandoning the Constitution.”
Host Jonathan Karl said, “There was a lot of talk about Nikki Haley supporters during the primaries, and it seems that in some states, even after she dropped out of the race, almost a third of Republican supporters still voted for her in search of an alternative to Trump. She now says she's on the campaign trail to help Donald Trump get re-elected. She, of course, also calls Trump crazy, unfit and unworthy of being president. What do you think of Nikki Haley's position on this issue?”
Cheney said, “I mean, I don't understand her position on this in any principled way. I think what she said, what she made clear when she ran in the primary, is true. Again, conservatives, those of us who believe in loyalty to the Constitution, have a responsibility and an obligation to recognize that this is not partisan politics. Once this election cycle is over, the country needs to rebuild a conservative, a true conservative movement. But voting for Donald Trump or nominating someone this November would mean making the decision that so many Republicans have made in the past, which is to abandon the Constitution and tell yourself that this is simply a partisan choice. That's not what we're facing this time.”
