Apple adding AI features to iPhone, other products

Apple has announced that it will be introducing several artificial intelligence-powered features to its product lineup starting next month, using AI software called Apple Intelligence.

Apple Intelligence uses generative AI to create text, images and other content based on your instructions.

The iPhone maker said Apple Intelligence will first be available in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1, with the features rolling out over the coming months.

“Our next-generation iPhone was designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence — it marks the beginning of an exciting new era,” CEO Tim Cook said at the company's “It's Glowtime” event and product launch.

Apple unveiled the new AI-enhanced iPhone 16 at its innovation event on Monday, showing off new features like the ability to identify objects using the phone's camera, create new emoji by typing a description, and receive summaries of emails with the most important information rather than just seeing the first few lines of each one in your inbox.

The company also enhanced the capabilities of its personal assistant, Siri, with AI: users can type questions to Siri on their iPhone, iPad or Mac and switch between text and voice while using the tool.

“Apple Intelligence marks a new era for Siri, making it more natural, more contextual and more personal for the user,” said Craig Federighi, Apple's head of software engineering.

Apple Intelligence also gives you tools that can prioritize certain notifications and use AI to summarize content like web pages and voice notes.

According to Apple, users will be able to use OpenAI's ChatGPT in a variety of areas, giving them access to chatbot knowledge as well as image and document understanding capabilities.

Mobile phones are seen as one of the most important battlegrounds as Apple and tech companies around the world race to incorporate AI into their products. The Cupertino, California-based company also hopes that AI features will encourage consumers to upgrade at a time when iPhone sales are sluggish.

Apple first announced plans for Apple Intelligence at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
