Congress to Honor 13 Service Members Killed in the Afghanistan Withdrawal

Congress will honor 13 American service members killed in the Biden-Harris administration's botched Afghanistan withdrawal at a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony on Tuesday.

The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET in the Capitol Rotunda, just hours before the first debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, who has sought to avoid blame for the disastrous retreat that took place on her and President Joe Biden's watch.

Harris told CNN in April 2021 that she was the only one in the room when Biden made the decision to fully withdraw US troops from Afghanistan, and that she was comfortable with the decision.

But after the withdrawal led to Afghanistan suddenly falling under Taliban control, the complete collapse of the U.S.-backed government and the chaotic evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people, with 13 service members leading the evacuations killed, Harris is trying to distance herself.

Her campaign on Friday tried to pin the blame for the deadly withdrawal on Trump, even though he left office seven months ago and Biden has said the decision to pull U.S. troops from Afghanistan was his. Moreover, both Biden and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin have said they have no regrets about the withdrawal.

The ceremony also comes amid a bitter dispute between the families of the 13 fallen soldiers who will likely attend the ceremony and the Harris-Waltz campaign.

After the families held a ceremony at Arlington to mark the anniversary of their deaths and invited Trump to attend, the Harris-Waltz campaign accused Trump of politicizing the cemetery and of evading it, and also criticized an alleged altercation between Arlington officials and two members of the Trump campaign over media restrictions at the cemetery, even though the families had given permission to film the ceremony.

The families slammed Harris for her criticism and the Biden-Harris administration's botched withdrawal that led to the deaths of their loved ones.

In a post on X on Monday, the Harris-Waltz campaign slammed Trump as a “danger” to the U.S. military.

Recent polls have shown that veterans overwhelmingly favor Trump over Harris, and that active-duty military personnel also favor Trump over Harris.
