A Quinnipiac University poll released Monday showed former President Donald Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris by 4 points in Georgia, a margin outside the margin of error.
The poll is important because Harris is desperate to win Georgia, the first state she visited after the Democratic National Convention in August, to reduce Trump's multiple paths to victory.
Political experts believe that Trump's victory in Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania would ensure his reelection, but if Harris wins Georgia, Trump will have to outperform expectations in other states.
A Quinnipiac University survey found the following support:
- Trump: 49 percent
- Harris: 45 percent
- Margin of error: ±3.2 percent
Quinnipiac University analyzed the data.
Former President Trump has 49 percent of the vote, Vice President Harris has 45 percent, and independent candidate Cornel West and Socialism and Liberation Party candidate Claudia de la Cruz each have 1 percent of the vote. All other third-party candidates have less than 1 percent of the vote.
Republicans support Trump 93% to 4%, while Democrats support Harris 94% to 2%. Independents are split evenly between the two extremes, with 46% backing Harris and 46% backing Trump.
There are big disparities by gender and race: 56 percent to 37 percent of men support Trump, while 52 percent to 43 percent of women support Harris. 82 percent to 8 percent of black voters support Harris, while 68 percent to 28 percent of white voters support Trump.
Public Opinion Poll sampling 969 people who may vote in Georgia from September 4 to 8, 2024.
