ABC’s Linsey Davis raises eyebrows with abortion fact-check against Trump: ‘Completely interjects herself’

Lindsey Davis, co-host of ABC's presidential debate, caught people's attention on Tuesday when she fact-checked former President Trump's views on abortion.

Asked about Trump's stance on abortion, ABC's Davis noted that Trump had bragged about overturning Roe v. Wade and called himself “the most pro-life president in American history,” but then declared he was committed to protecting women's reproductive rights. Trump also recently said Florida's six-week abortion ban is “too short,” but said he would vote against a referendum to overturn the state's six-week abortion ban.

“The reason I'm voting is because … abortion is allowed at the ninth month. You just look at the governor of West Virginia. [Viriginia]”The former governor — not the current governor, he's doing a great job — the former governor said, 'When the baby is born, we're going to decide what to do with the baby,' meaning, we're going to execute the baby. And so that's what I did,” Trump said.

“They are extreme. The Democrats are extreme,” Trump continued.

After Trump finished speaking, Davis sharply interjected to correct the record.

“There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a newborn baby,” Davis said.

Trump was likely referring to former Virginia Democratic Governor Ralph Northam, who made headlines for saying he would perform abortions late in pregnancy if there was a severe birth defect or the fetus was deemed non-viable.

“If a mother goes into labor, I can tell you exactly what will happen. The baby will be delivered. The baby will be kept comfortable. If that is the preference of the mother and the family, the baby will be resuscitated and then there will be a discussion between the doctor and the mother,” Northam said in a radio interview.

Davis' fact-check surprised many on social media.

Fox News host and former Trump spokesperson Kayla McEnany said ABC should be “ashamed” and that its hosts were only trying to fact-check President Trump.

McEnany added, “Kamala brought up the 'both sides' hoax and the 'massacre' hoax of Charlottesville that has been fact-checked by the left-wing Snopes. Why does Trump have to expose this but the hosts can't? ABC hosts only fact-check Trump.”

“Lindsey Davis totally cut into the debate to help Kamala. Not a surprise at all. But I think Trump got it right on the abortion issue, which is Kamala's only issue,” OutKick founder Clay Travis wrote.

Conservative commentator Stephen L. Miller repeatedly responded when people shared falsehoods told by Harris, asking, “Why didn't Lindsay Davis fact-check this?”

Many others were also thinking about this moment.

Later in the debate, co-moderator David Muir also fact-checked Trump after the former president suggested illegal immigrants eat dogs and other pets.
