During ABC's coverage of Tuesday's presidential debate, ABC News Washington bureau chief John Karl said that during the debate, Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, “didn't really explain some of the big questions the public has about why she changed her policy positions on a number of things.” But that's also partly the fault of former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential nominee, because he didn't hold the debate to her effectively and Harris “looked like someone who could serve as president.”
“Kamala Harris didn't really explain the big question of why she changed her policy views on so many things,” Karl said. “Part of the reason is that Donald Trump was not effective in engaging her. I agree. Trump seemed not just angry but upset. In contrast, Harris – again, something much of the world doesn't know – seemed like someone fit for the stage, someone who could serve as president.”
Later in the programme, ABC's senior parliamentary correspondent Rachel Scott said: “[T]The Trump campaign will jump on the fact that VP Kamala Harris didn't really explain the policy shift today. …But at the same time, almost everything VP Kamala Harris said tonight got on Trump's nerves. And that's exactly what his allies and advisers didn't want to see. Frankly, I don't think part of Donald Trump's debate prep was people eating dogs in Springfield or comparing rally sizes. They wanted him to stay focused on the issues, especially the issues where he has an advantage over Harris. [on]economy, immigration.”
