ABC News hosts Lindsey Davis and David Muir intervened at least seven times during Tuesday night's presidential debate to “fact check” former President Donald Trump, but never did so for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Many of their fact checks were inaccurate or incomplete. Here are seven of the most glaring examples (taken from ABC News): Transcript):
- Lindsey Davis: There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a newborn baby. Mr. Vice President, what is your response to President Trump?
- DAVID MUIR: Just to be clear here, you mentioned Springfield, Ohio. ABC News reached out to the mayor there, and he said he has had no credible reports of specific allegations that pets have been harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.
- David Muir: President Trump, as you know, the FBI has said that violent crime across the board is going down…
- DAVID MUIR: The question is about you as president, not about Speaker Pelosi, but I want Vice President Harris to answer it here.
- David Muir: I watched all of these videos. I didn't sense the irony. We lost by a hair. We weren't completely successful. And just to explain, you and your associates, you know there are 60 cases going before a number of judges…
- David Muir: Thank you, Mr. President. Vice President Harris, you heard the President tonight. The President said he didn't say he lost by a narrow margin. I mean, he doesn't think he lost the election. The winners are President Biden and you.
- DAVID MUIR: Thank you, President Trump. You said she went to negotiate with President Vladimir Putin. Vice President Harris, have you met with President Vladimir Putin? Can you explain that tonight?
Harris made many fabrications in her remarks, notably that of “very fine people” in Charlottesville, but neither Davis nor Muir tried to weigh in. The “fact-check” was a one-way street.
