A beloved TikTok user passed away shortly after running Disneyland's Halloween half marathon, less than 24 hours after saying she was “a little concerned” about the event.
Suspect Bobby Graves, known on social media by his middle name “Caleb,” was clutching his chest as he crossed the finish line of a race at an amusement park in California about 7 a.m. Sunday, Anaheim police said. people.
Graves, 35, collapsed and went into cardiac arrest, Anaheim Police Sergeant Matt Sutter said.
“Firefighters and paramedics were on scene,” Sutter said, noting that “paramedics could not have arrived on scene any faster” to treat the social media star.
Paramedics “provided life-saving measures” to Graves, an experienced and avid distance runner, before transporting him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Sutter told People magazine that the social media influencer had no health issues prior to his death.
The coroner's office is still investigating the cause of the cardiac arrest.
Graves reportedly completed the 13.1-mile race in under two hours.
“The race started at 5 a.m. I don't know what starting wave he was in, but he crossed the finish line at approximately 7 a.m.,” Sutter said, adding that Graves ran a “really good time.”
The race took place in the early hours of the morning as Southern California was hit by a triple-digit heat wave, with Anaheim reaching a high of 100°C. By noon Sunday, the temperature was 107 degrees..
The day before her death, Graves said she “passed out” from heat stroke after returning home from walking her dog.
“I'm a little worried because the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon is tomorrow,” Graves said in a video titled “This Heat Is No Joke.”
The social media influencer said he had been out for “about 20 minutes” around 2pm on Saturday, returned and collapsed “about 10 minutes later.”
“I grew up in Texas, so I know what the heat is like, but the UV exposure that comes with the Southern California heat is uniquely terrifying,” Graves explained.
“I really hope I can complete the race tomorrow morning.”
Heat stroke occurs when a person's body temperature rises to 101-104 degrees and they are unable to cool down due to surrounding heat or pre-existing health conditions. The average core body temperature is about 98.6 degrees.
