During the presidential debate with Vice President Harris, former President Trump joked, “I'm going to send her a MAGA hat,” in reference to her changing policy stances during the presidential election.
Harris was heavily left-leaning when she first ran for president in 2019, but has softened her positions on some issues since becoming the Democratic nominee for President Biden.
“Everything that she believed in three, four years ago is gone. She now follows my philosophies. In fact, I was going to send her a MAGA hat,” Trump said, to which Harris laughed.
He has previously denounced Harris as a “Marxist” and nicknamed her “Comrade Kamala.”
In an interview with CNN, Harris defended her position, saying “my values haven't changed,” and that her overall goals, such as tackling climate change and securing the southern border, remain the same.
Trump has portrayed Harris as far-left and has tried to link her to the issues she ran on in the 2019 election, and accused her of stealing his ideas after she said she supported a proposal originally proposed by Trump to end the tip tax.
The issue has become a key attempt for both candidates to appeal to working-class voters.
