Democratic strategist and CNN commentator Van Jones said Vice President Harris “put former President Trump in the right place” during Tuesday night's presidential debate.
“She was really speaking for the people. People on the right might not realise this, but she went back again and again to her middle-class background. He just spoke for himself and went into every idea you could think of.” Jones says At a CNN panel after the debate.
“Kamala Harris has done something great for every parent in America. She's put a stop to bullies,” he added.
Ms Harris and Mr Trump met for the first time in Philadelphia to debate key issues such as abortion and immigration, and an overnight poll showed most Americans said Ms Harris won the debate despite her repeated taunts, rants and conspiracy theories against Mr Trump.
“She just punched him,” Jones claimed, later adding, “She slapped him.”
“People wanted to see someone discipline this bully, and they saw candidate after candidate fail to discipline him,” he said. “And she stood there and disciplined him.”
In a striking contrast, Harris remained calm while Trump, when challenged, grew visibly angry and refused to make eye contact with his opponent.
Ahead of Tuesday's debate, Jones said it would be a “job interview” for Harris because she would have to make her case to the American people. He called Trump a “class clown” and said Harris needed to focus on herself.
“Not only did she pass the commander in chief test, he failed it. He failed it,” Jones said after the debate.
