Where is the woke? Space Marine 2 leaves gender politics at the door and flies off the shelves

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 made a bold move: it didn't shoehorn progressive politics into the story.

Despite only being able to play the early release version (for a whopping $90) for three days, fans flocked to grab a physical copy of Saber Interactive's latest release.

Buying physical copies of games is becoming popular again among gamers who fear that updates and patches will ruin the original, un-awakened versions of their beloved games — just look at Tomb Raider and Stellar Blade.

With physical copies all sold out at Walmart, Best Buy, and GameStop, the digital download was the only option for this review – the same price, of course.

After around six hours of gameplay, Space Marine 2 has delivered an experience that fans of the original story will appreciate, with a seeming total lack of real-world politics. The game delivers on the promise of awe-inspiring hordes while providing a fun, but sometimes hand-hurting experience.

When playing on PS5, it's hard not to notice the awkwardness of the controls. Compared to titles like Chivalry 2 and Doom Eternal (which is actually the next-gen upgrade), it's hard to string together movements. dullThis was definitely unexpected for a game of this generation, especially one that was this highly anticipated.

Naturally, some of this movement is due to the physical weight of the character and the armor, but not all of it.

There were also some character running glitches and sliding that can probably be fixed with a patch, but this is the kind of level 1 stuff I don't expect to encounter at this retail price.

Invisible walls were also totally unexpected. Parts of the game are too linear, reminiscent of PS3/Xbox 360 era games. Gamers will ask themselves why they can't just stomp on plants while trying to jump to the nearest platform within reach. If they want to fall to their death, shouldn't they be able to?

The second-highest difficulty will make your fingers hurt: switching between hundreds of enemies, sometimes shooting them one at a time, will test even the best fingers tested by Metal Gear Solid.

These hack-and-slash controls mean lots of button pressing, but they're nowhere near as flashy or fast as the aforementioned Doom Eternal, which requires users to remember to blink.

At the same time, the controls were disappointing. You could be blinded by bullets or exploding acid bubbles from a distance, and have no choice but to run to find out what's going on. Weapon controls are usually over-the-shoulder, making it difficult to move while keeping an accurate sense of enemy location. It feels like users are encouraged not to use the scope, but in most cases, it's not easy to do so.

Again, due to the nature of the main character, it's tolerable to an extent, but it does get annoying.

Even more head-scratching was the fact that you couldn't pick up ammo by walking on or near it — the press-and-hold technique is a painstaking endeavor, especially when you're under fire from all angles.

Users can only carry one primary weapon, one sidearm, one melee weapon, and three grenades, which feels extremely restrictive considering Space Marines can stand up to eight feet tall and weigh up to 2,000 pounds.

“There are no female Custodes in Space Marines 2.”

Prior to release, fans were wary of the game's potential to include recent changes to a decades-old storyline, and while it's hard to gauge how much fans disliked the changes to the story, some of the more recent storylines are noteworthy.

The Park Place Reported In May, the legend was rewritten to include women, with the words “son” and “man” removed from ancient texts.

Work on adding women to the story through rewrites continued in July, with Games Workshop, which makes Warhammer figures, explaining a new “revelation” that “Custodians can be of any gender.”

However, none of the newly rewritten content appears to have made it into Space Marine 2, and fans are excited about the new release.

Kabrutus from DEI Detected gave the game a passing grade, X“Just to be clear, there are no female Custodes in Space Marines 2.”

Clearly the game made a big impact: Space Marine 2 recorded over 186,000 concurrent players upon release. steam Just the first week.

Gamers pay close attention to which games promote progressive politics, and Space Marine 2 appears to have taken that into consideration. Given the fall of Concord and the impending demise of Star Wars Outlaws, it may be in the developer's best interest to avoid politics outside of the game.
