“One Saturday morning at the end of August, I woke up here in Rio and looked at my phone. For the first time since I was living in China as a correspondent before coming here, I looked at my phone and Twitter wasn't working.”
The Guardian's Latin America correspondent, Tom Phillips, tell Michael Safi How Elon Musk got into conflict with the Brazilian government.
Brazil's Supreme Court banned X, formally known as Twitter, after Musk failed to comply with a court order to remove the X profile, which was accused of spreading false information and failing to appoint local legal representatives.
“Musk decided not to comply with Brazilian law,” Phillips said. “He decided not to meet the deadline, and so X was blocked. It was a very dramatic turn of events.”
What does the dispute mean for Brazilians who rely on Musk's Starlink equipment for their internet connection?
