Ellie Meistal, the Nation's justice reporter, told “The Lead-Out” on Wednesday that supporters of former President Donald Trump are just as “despicable” as Trump himself.
“The way he desecrated Arlington National Cemetery would be enough to end any normal politician's career, even saying my building was the tallest in the world before the World Trade Center collapsed and now it's the second tallest. Everything he does is despicable,” host Joy Reid said.
“The reason his career isn't over is because his supporters are just as despicable. Trump is a narcissist with no compassion or empathy for others. It's all about himself. That's why he lies about 9/11,” Meistal said.
He added, “He's probably the most unkind president in 200 years since Andrew Jackson. And that works to his advantage because his supporters are just as intolerant and have very little compassion or empathy for others. So, as you say, when he essentially desecrates our national symbols and seems to put himself above all else, his supporters want that to happen too. They want that with their own lives. That's their mindset. So when Trump acts like this, vulgar and crude, it doesn't hurt him in any way. And that's because his supporters think that vulgar and crude is actually kind of cool.”
