Where is inflation the highest? Chicago and New York rank near the top

The Labor Department released its August inflation report on Wednesday. But the pace of inflation is much faster in certain parts of the country than in others.

The Northeast saw inflation rise 3.4% year-over-year in August, the highest of the four regions analyzed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and well above the national rate, with the Mid-Atlantic and New England faring slightly better at 3.4% and 3.3%, respectively.

The Midwest region's inflation rate was 2.6%, ahead of the South's 2.3%. In the West, inflation was 2.2% in August, with the Pacific region at 2.3% ahead of the Mountain region's 2.0%.

Seattle had the highest inflation rate among western cities in August at 3.1%, while Los Angeles was at 2.9%. San Francisco Bay Area Inflation was 2.7% in August, compared with 2.3% in metropolitan Phoenix and 1.5% in metropolitan Alaska.
