A majority of voters say Vice President Kamala Harris is to blame for the record increase in illegal immigration between the U.S. and Mexico over the past three and a half years. The New York Times/A poll from the University of Siena revealed this.
of vote The survey asked voters, “To what extent do you think Vice President Kamala Harris should be held responsible for the border crisis, namely record levels of illegal immigration?” 63 percent said Harris bears “a great deal of responsibility” or “some responsibility.”
In April 2021, President Joe Biden asked Harris to lead his administration's efforts to “stop the flow of people and stem migration to our southern border,” leading many in the media and lawmakers to start calling Harris the “border czar.”
Harris has since tried to distance herself from the issue of illegal immigration.
The poll found that a majority of voters are unconvinced by Ms Harris' attempts to distance herself from the border, with just 16% saying she is “not at all to blame” for record levels of illegal immigration over the past few years.
Among those who disparage Harris, 74 percent are non-college-educated white voters, 51 percent are non-college-educated non-white voters, and 62 percent are college-educated white voters.
Perhaps most importantly, 63 percent of swing voters said they blamed Harris.
When asked who voters trust more on immigration, the poll found that 53% support former President Donald Trump on the issue, with a minority (43%) backing Harris. Among swing voters, 53% support Trump over Harris.
Trump has long pledged to implement mass deportations, crack down on illegal immigration at the border and tighten the labor market by preventing foreign workers from coming to the United States.
Meanwhile, Harris has vowed to continue Biden's tradition on immigration, which has allowed about 7 million immigrants to the United States since Biden took office and ensured that most of the job growth in the labor market went to foreign workers.
The poll was conducted among approximately 1,700 voters from Sept. 3 to Sept. 6, and has a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.
