Harris’ Lie About Trump’s ‘Bloodbath’ Comment Was ‘Intrinsically Fair’

During Thursday's broadcast of WBUR's “Here and Now,” NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik said ABC debate hosts David Muir and Lindsey Davis could have corrected 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris for falsely claiming that former Republican President Donald Trump would be a disaster if he lost, calling Harris' false accusations “essentially fair in their representation of him.” He also defended ABC's failure to fact-check Harris, saying “she's been much more conventional at exaggerating, obfuscating and distorting things than a traditional politician.”

Folkenflik praised the moderators, saying, “With Trump, they could have picked from dozens of talking points along the way, but they really dug deep on specific examples.”

Co-host Lisa Mullins asked, “I don't think there was much fact-checking done on anything Kamala Harris said. Not everything she said was 100% accurate. Donald Trump and his supporters are complaining that there's bias. Do they have a point?”

Folkenflik responded, “There was one moment in particular where I think Vice President Kamala Harris could have countered, and that was when she promised or claimed that he'd promised or claimed that if Biden-Harris were re-elected at the time, there would be a bloodbath. And in the context of that particular statement, it's clear that he was talking about the economic impact. That would be a pretty legitimate counterargument. But there are two things. One, he uses rhetoric about bloodbath and violence frequently and ties it together in all kinds of ways. So the way he presents it is essentially fair. And two, she's been much more conventional than a traditional politician in terms of exaggerating or obfuscating or distorting things. There wasn't a flood of inaccurate or false statements, sometimes lies.”
