Jenna Ortega says late Cameron Boyce stopped ‘uncomfortable’ audition kiss scene when they were teens

Jenna Ortega recalled that when she was a teenager, he stood up for her during an audition that involved a kiss with the late Cameron Boyce.

The 21-year-old actress knew Boyce since they were children, when they were both Disney Channel stars. The actor died in 2019 at the age of 20 after suffering a seizure in his sleep.

“The last time I saw my friend Cameron Boyce, who I've known since I was 11 or 12, we were supposed to kiss. [in an audition] “He'd known me since I was 11 or 12,” Ortega said. “A few years later, when I was 15 or 16, we came over and we were supposed to be a couple, but he was obviously kind of weird and a little older, so we just looked at each other and were like, 'No, I can't do this.'”

“I was so happy because I was restless and going through a really hard time,” she continued, “and we both wished each other well.”

Ortega told her co-stars that she was “really grateful” that Boyce noticed her discomfort and spoke out.

Both Ryder and O'Hara praised the “Mrs. Fletcher” star for his chivalrous actions, noting that he is a “gentleman.”

Upon Boyce's passing, his family released a heartfelt statement through a spokesman.

“It is with deep sadness that we report the loss of Cameron this morning,” a Boyce family spokesman said.

“The world has now lost undoubtedly one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him,” the family added. They said they were “completely heartbroken” by his death and asked for privacy while they grieve.

Boyce has been acting since he was 9 years old and is also active in charity work. In March 2019, he introduced former Vice President and future President of the United States Joe Biden at the Biden Courage Awards.

Victor told the outlet that his outpouring of love for his son “means everything.”

“Because of the love Cameron received, we still get that love. Or we can grow as a foundation. We can spread the mission, we can spread the message, because people still want to hang on to Cameron. People don't want Cameron to go away,” Victor said.

“And just as we are preserving his legacy, all of his fans and supporters are keeping his legacy alive,” he added, “and that's very important to us for a lot of reasons.”

“For me, this is a reminder of the amazing soul that we not only gave birth to, but raised,” Libby said, “so it's very mixed emotions. It's very bittersweet. It's a very difficult day, but it's also very beautiful knowing what he meant to so many people.”
