Over half of Americans say Harris won debate against Trump: Poll

A new poll finds that more than half of Americans believe Vice President Harris defeated former President Trump in last week's presidential debate.

ABC/Ipsos PollA poll released Sunday showed 58% of Americans chose Harris as the winner of the debate, while 36% chose Trump.

Pollsters noted that this is a reversal of the results from the June debate between Trump and Biden, in which 66% of Americans picked the former president as the winner, compared with 28% who chose Biden.

The poll came three days after Trump and Harris faced off in their first, and perhaps only, debate on the national stage.

The debates also boosted Harris's favorability among voters, according to the poll: About 37% of Americans said the debates made them like her more, while 23% said it made them less likeable. About 38% said it had no effect either way.

Regarding Trump, 30% said the debate made them look less favorable, 17% said it made them look more favorable, and about 50% said it made no difference.

The former president appeared visibly annoyed throughout the debate, repeatedly refusing to look at his Democratic rival and appearing visibly angry at times, suggesting the vice president was getting on his nerves.

Various political commentators, as well as The Wall Street Journal's editorial board, claimed Harris was the “winner” of the debate.TrumpHe believes it was “the best debate ever.”

In contrast to Trump, who seemed shaken up for much of the debate, Harris performed with a consistent confidence and sought to position herself as a leader of a new generation, saying, “Obviously I'm not Joe Biden, and I'm not Donald Trump.”

The ABC News/Ipsos poll, conducted by Langer Research Associates, was conducted Sept. 11-13 among a random sample of 3,276 adults nationwide. The margin of sampling error is 2 percentage points.
